Academic English 10: (Full year class - It is not recommended that any student with under a B average in English 9 register for this course)

The English 10 curriculum involves all facets of verbal communication: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In composition, the writing process and essay format are emphasized. A daily journal, grammar mini-lessons, and weekly vocabulary lessons are also completed. Literature units emphasize theme and figurative language and are built around major literay concepts: plot, character, point of view, setting, symbolism, and poetic forms. This course covers the same course content as English 10 but in greater depth, with more challenging and extensive tests and more complex critical thinking activities and projects.

  • Symbolic self-portrait pumpkin collages w/ essays & presentations
  • Various informal, creative writing activities that reinforce audience awareness ("Alien Invasion"), voice / narrative point of view ("Foot Story"), organization & coherence ("Write Around"), etc.
  • "Flip books" to reinforce comprehension of terms & parts of speech
  • Suscription to Teen Newsweek to reinforce nonfiction reading skills
  • Creating products with ad campaigns utilizing propaganda techniques (nonfiction writing skills)
  • Midterm Portfolios to demonstrate quality & variety of first semester work
  • Listening to an original recording of the historic 1938 radio play, Invasion from Mars & creating a modernized media broadcast script
  • Reading & writing a childhood reminiscence (w/central idea & sensory imagery)
  • Arthurian Legend - based on the texts of Sir Thomas Mallory, Alfred Lord Tennyson, & T.H. White; supplemented with presentations/activities pertaining to medieval weaponary, chivalry, & knighthood; analysis of heoric characters
