English III: Full year class - Open to all eleventh grade students
All students are required to take four years of English. General English III classes will read American Literature from pre-colonial to present time. Ohio Graduation Test (O.G.T.) review sessions will also be available for students who need them. Supplemental literary, informational and persuasive texts will also be read and analyzed for content and author's intent. General classes will spend a good deal of time on organizational skills from prewriting graphics, to outlining content, to presenting PowerPoint presentations. A constant class routine will also foster student responsibility. Extensive reading and/or writing units occur only on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Tuesdays are reserved for vocabulary building exercises and quizzes. And Mondays attempt to create lifelong habits of reading with sustained silent reading (S.S.R.).
Academic English III: Full year class - Open to all eleventh grade students
Academic classes are held to a higher standard than regular classes but they will read from the same American Literature textbook. Supplemental material, assignments, and/or grading will often be more difficult. Academic English III will have ACT prep units on both the writing and reading sections of the ACT as well as completing the third level of the Sadler-Oxford SAT vocabulary-building program. Academic classes will also complete essays, including but not limited to participation in the VFW's Voice of Democracy speech contest and Marshall University's S.C.O.R.E.S. competition. Classical argument will also be studied and applied in college prep essays: interpretations, positions, proposals, etc.
